Nomos is one of the respected brands in the world of luxury watches. If you are looking to buy a luxury watch, then one of the brands that would come to your mind is the Nomos Glashutte. The Glashutte brand of watches are well-known German watches that have ruled the market for more than three decades. The brand is known for specializing in artisan watches of manual winding and automatic mechanical types.

About Nomos

Nomos Glashütte is a German watch company that interestingly started in the same year as when the Berlin wall came down. Roland Schwertner is the founder of this company who started the firm in 1990. The name of the company is derived from its place of origin, Glashutte in Saxony.

When the watch company commenced, Susanne Gunther designed the original collection. The Nomos watches are known for their modernist design. They follow the principles of the Bauhaus style of purist design.

The company started its operations by launching four models, Nomos Tangente, Nomos Orion, Nomos Ludwig, and Nomos Tetra. The Nomos Club and Nomos Metro are models that were added later. The company has also added gold models Lux and Lambda to its collection. There are a total of thirteen variants of the watches offered by Nomos worldwide and Nomos HK today.

The Nomos movements

When it started operations, Nomos initially made mechanical watches that worked on hand-wound movements. Until the year 2005, the basis for the movements was the ETA SA/ Peseuz 7001 Swiss watch. Since 2005, Nomos uses only in-house movements. In 2005, the company introduced its first automatic watch, the Nomos Tangomat.

The Nomos Swing system is an innovation of the company that ensured it did not have to depend on Swiss manufacturers. Introduced in 2014, the Nomos swing system is in the in-house escapement developed by the brand. This made it one of the very companies in the world to make its own calibers.

The Nomos movements are rhodium-plated. They have a Glashutte three-quarter plate. Some of the features of these movements include:

  • Stop-seconds mechanism.
  • Sunburst finish on the crown and ratchet wheel.
  • Six positions for fine adjustment.
  • Tempered blue screws.
  • Twin mainspring balance.*
  • Screwed gold chatons.*
  • Swan neck fine adjustment*
