History of Rolex Datejust

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust was the first watch equipped with the automatic date changing function when it was launched in 1945, a marvelous creation that soon took the world by storm.

For about a century, Rolex is prized for its unparalleled quality, style and technology. It has become a symbol of prestige in the hearts of many. Throughout the years, it does not cease to innovate and gifts us with numerous mind-blowing new designs and inventions. Speaking of which the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust model, a certified automatic chronometer is the perfect example. It was introduced in 1945, the same year Rolex celebrated its 40th anniversary. The Datejust was an incredibly special timepiece as it was the first self-winding watch to feature a date window on the dial and to possess an automatic date changing function. To this day, it is still considered one of Rolex’s most important inventions and an indispensable member of Rolex’s line up.

The First Datejust Model

The first Rolex Datejust with the reference 4467 came in 18K yellow gold, the only style option back in the day. It features Rolex’s iconic waterproof Oyster case measured 36mm in diameter and a fluted bezel. There is a small bubble winder at the deeply domed back. Introduced for the first time along with the Datejust was Rolex’s well-known Jubilee bracelet, a 5-piece metal link bracelet specifically designed to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary as the name suggests. Although the Jubilee bracelet was originally produced to fit the Datejust, as we know it today, it is now used for other Rolex’s models as well.

Bettered Rolex Datejust Watches

Throughout the years, the Datejust has been continuously enhanced and improved in both its movement and features. One of the most notable additions would be the Cyclops from 1955, a magnifying lens over the date window to enlarge it by two and a half times for easier readability. It had soon become a standard and a defining feature for Rolex’s timepieces. The overall design of the Datejust has also become much more varied and it is now available in a range of colors and styles.

Besides the Jubilee bracelet, the Datejust also provides another option with Rolex’s classic Oyster bracelet. In 1955, Rolex incorporated the Turn-O-Graph, a wristwatch featuring a rotating bezel introduced in 1953, to the Datejust collection. The Turn-O-Graph was intended as a device to measure and record time and this feature was kept even after joining the Datejust family. Later the Datejust Turn-O-Graph watch was given as awards to the pilots of the United States Air Force who returned from combat missions. The timepiece thus earned the nickname of “Rolex Thunderbird” after the squadron “Thunderbirds”. In 1957, a ladies version of the Datejust, called the Lady Datejust was introduced and the collection started including mid-sized versions.

The Datejust is a masterpiece that appeals to all watch lovers from around the world with its variety. It is a model meant to fit all individual tastes, and to satisfy both men and women. You can always find a Datejust in your preferred material, whether it is 18K yellow gold, rose gold or stainless steel. The options are endless.

The Launch of Datejust II

In late 2009, the Rolex Datejust II was introduced. This new line of wristwatches contains a more streamlined and modern look different from the original Datejust. It also comes with new innovative features, such as the certified Caliber 3136 chronometer movement that sets the old and new Datejust apart. On the other hand, some iconic features remain, such as the classic date window that defines a Datejust timepiece. The Rolex Datejust II is also equipped with the air-tight Oyster case that keeps water and unwanted particles away from the perpetual movement. Such protection is further enhanced by Rolex’s Twinlock Winding Crown, a famous system that has been in use since its introduction in 1953.

The Latest Datejust Model

The latest Rolex Datejust model is Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 with the reference of 126333. It is now a fans’ favorite and is even said to have taken back the markets claimed by the various Datejust II models in the previous years. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 features a 41mm case, significantly larger than the classic Rolex Datejust 36 with a 36mm case. Despite the size, it can still pass as an elegant timepiece, a robust dress watch or your everyday go-to watch, depending on how you dress and the occasion. What is most striking about the Rolex Datejust 41 is the eye-catching blue dial, and of course Rolex’s patented Rolesor material, a mix of white gold and steel, that gives the piece the remarkable two-tone look. At the 2017 Baselworld, Rolex further introduced two new members to the family of the 2016 Datejust 41. The two new models come in elegant white metal.
