History of Glashütte Original
The town of Glashütte inherits a rich watchmaking tradition that dates back to the mid 19th century. In 1845, the first watch making company in this region was established. It became the founding stone for the highly praised Glashütte fine watchmaking tradition. Legendary watchmakers like Ferdinand A. Lange, Julius Assmann, Johannes Dürrstein and Moritz Grossmann had contributed immensely in the successful development of Glashütte’s traditional watch making industry. Gradually, this small town became the capital of German watch manufacturing. Glashütte was also a major production centre of marine chronometers and ship clocks.
The timepieces with "Original Glashütte" name were appeared in 1916.This label had been used to authenticate the origin of watches made in the Glashütte region. However, the region's flourishing watch business was badly hit by the Second World War. After the war, Germany was divided.
This event also marked the establishment of two watchmaking groups: Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe in West Germany and Volkseigener Betrieb in East Germany. After the Unification of Germany, a single watch group, VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe was created. Later, it became a private company. In 2000, Switzerland based Swatch group acquired the Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb Company.
A prominent member of Swatch group’s luxury watch brand portfolio, glashütte original continues to manufacture its timepieces in the Glashütte region in Germany. The company produces its own movements in Glashütte. The brand also owns a dial manufacturing company in Pforzheim.
The Glashütte Hallmarks
Just like their illustrious predecessors, Glashütte Original's timepieces feature some signature elements. In 1888, Glashütte watch makers introduced the swan-neck fine adjustment mechanism to properly regulate the watch. The mechanical movements of Glashütte Original timepieces typically incorporate single or double swan-neck fine adjustment for better regulation.
Other historically inspired feature is the three-quarter plate with the characteristic Glashütte striped finish. The other signature features of the movements are galvanized surfaces, polished steel components, screw-mounted gold chatons, blued screws, bevelled component edges and hand-engraved decorations.
Panorama Date is a distinct feature of numerous Glashütte Original watches. It refers to the large sized, easy-to-read date window. Thanks to its unique design, the precise date can be easily read-out even in multi-function watches.
