When it comes to the history of the luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, we will have to date back to more than 160 years ago. Established in Florence, Italy, Panerai has been delivering exciting innovations to the watch industry. The invention of the luminous Panerai Radiomir had accomplished the rise of Panerai to one of the top watchmakers in the world.

Panerai had been supplying quality precision instruments for military use for decades. Been through ups and downs, the brand started to make its public debut to the civilian market in 1993. Instantly after entering the market, Panerai achieved exceptional worldwide success.

The Panerai Luminor is one of the first models that Panerai debuted to the public. The watch has developed as the mainstay collection that is highly admired by Panerai lovers. The Luminor watches perfectly blend the modern design aesthetics with the traditions of marine watches elements. These Panerai watches are widely acknowledged as the icon of the brand by the watch enthusiasts over the world.

Today Panerai has already become one of the favourite luxury watch brands amongst watch collectors. Its two exquisite watch collections, the Panerai Luminor and Panerai Radiomir are believed to be the pillars for the success of the Panerai brand. These fascinating watches have helped Panerai to grow tremendously and gain massive popularity all across the world.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Panerai has been an official supplier of precision instruments for the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina in Italian). In 1916, Panerai patented its first invention in France. It was a radium-based powder that provided luminosity to the dials of the measuring instruments and watches. The invention of this Panerai Radiomir substance was a milestone for its watchmaking journey that attracted the attention of the world, especially the military.

In 1936 Panerai created a prototype called Radiomir for the request from the Royal Italian Navy of designing a watch that should offer excellent readability, highly precise and resistant to extreme conditions for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command.

The Radiomir prototype featured the screw-down winding crown and screw-down caseback.

The prototype successfully passed the test and had been supplied to the Navy since then. The models released in the next few years were particularly designed for underwater purpose by the Italian navy.

However, a few years later, a huge issue occurred in the company's production. Due to the toxic and radioactive nature of its luminous Radiomir material, the production of Panerai Radiomir watches was stopped.

In the year 1949, the brand created another model called Luminor to replace the Panerai Radiomir models. The Panerai Luminor models are basically inspired by the Panerai Radiomir watch. These Panerai Luminor models featured a robust case in the Panerai iconic cushion shape. It was embedded with a protection bridge that could make the crown impervious to water.

Until the 1990s, Panerai had been manufacturing professional watches and precision instruments for the military forces. But soon after a few years, in 1993, Panerai decided to enter the civilian market and made a public debut with its first luxury watches. It started to produce its quality watches for the general public. Panerai introduced three exquisite watch models: the Panerai Luminor, Panerai Luminor Marina and the Panerai Mare Nostrum. Within a short span of time, these watches gained high popularity among the watch admirers due to their distinctive design and practicality. Let’s read further to have a deeper look on the design and technicalities of the Panerai Luminor watch.
