History of Guess Brand
Based in Los Angeles in USA, this multi-national fashion apparel and accessories conglomerate was co-founded by Marciano brothers (Paul, Armand, Maurice and Georges) from France. They belong to a Jewish family settled in France and used to operate a clothing company. In 1981, Georges Marciano and his brothers moved to USA and established a business venture in Los Angeles to market their denim jeans collection. They have chosen the word guess to name their newly established company. The brand’s stone-washed Denim Jeans became an instant success. Subsequently, the company has expanded its business by introducing new apparel lines and fashion accessories under GUESS and Marciano brands.
The brand continued to grow under the eminent leadership and creative guidance of Marciano brothers. In 1993, Georges Marciano left the company after selling his shares to his brothers. In 1996, GUESS became a public company. After some duration, Armand also took retirement from GUESS while Paul and Maurice continued to work with the company. Presently, Guess? Inc. is a well-established business conglomerate that designs, markets, distributes and licenses a lifestyle collection of contemporary apparel, accessories and related consumer products.
GUESS has been renowned for their numerous award-winning advertisement campaigns. The supermodels/ celebrities who starred in the brand’s ad campaigns are Claudia Schiffer, Anna Nicole Smith, Eva Herzigova, Valeria Mazza, Kate Upton, Julia Lescova, Laetitia Casta, Camila Cabello and Jennifer Lopez.
History of Guess Watches
In 1983, the first GUESS watch collection was introduced. In the beginning, GUESS watches were manufactured and distributed by Callanen International under a licensing agreement that was valid for more than two decades. In 1991, Timex Corporation acquired Callanen International. During this period, GUESS became the single largest licensed watch brand in the world. This initial contract expired on 31 December 2006.
In 2006, GUESS and Callanen signed a new global license agreement. As per this revised agreement, Callanen acquired the rights to manufacture and distribute Guess and Guess Collection (Gc) watches for another 15 years with effect from 01 January 2007. GUESS also insisted its partner to set up a separate subsidiary. According to the proposals of the revised contract, in 2007, Timex group established a new company named Sequel AG in Switzerland. Presently, Timex Group manufactures Guess and Gc watches along with other brands like Nautica, Versace, Versus and Salvatore Ferragamo.
