History of Seiko

A shop called 'K.Hattori' was established by Mr. Kintaro Hattori back in 1881 in Tokyo, Japan. This was originally a jewelry and watch shop. Seikosha was the company's official name in 1892 and the clocks were made under this brand title. In 1923, an earthquake hit the city and in that unfortunate incident, Seikosha's factory was completely destroyed. The company had to come back stronger and at the end of 1924, they released their first watch after the disastrous incident. The name was officially changed to “Seiko” with the launch of the new watch and it was the foundation of the brand that is today appreciated and praised for the precision and accuracy of their watches. Seiko is a Japanese language word that means "success."

We all have witnessed watches and clocks with quartz mentioned over it. But only a few of us know what quartz is and how it came into being. Well, in 1969, the world's first quartz watch was introduced and it won't come as a surprise that Seiko was the brand that manufactured first of these popular watches. The name of the watch was Seiko Astron and it costed so much that in the price of that watch, at that time people would have bought a regular middle-sized car. Moreover, Seiko was also the first brand to manufacture a chronograph. This specific kind of watch can be used as a regular watch and as a stopwatch at the same time.

Seiko's signature watches Grand Seiko was introduced and first manufactured in 1960. These watches were made with special care and today as well are known for their unmatched durability and accuracy. Grand Seiko was Seiko's first step into classy mechanical watchmaking. Later on in the 1980s, Seiko was successfully able to manufacture the world's first automatic quartz watch as well. This watch had all the perks of an automatic watch and the quartz technology altogether. Because of not such a good initial response in 1991, these automatic quartz watches were re-launched by Seiko and were called Seiko Kinetic. It got its name due to the fact that the function of these watches depend on your day to day movements.

Since 1917, the name of the company changed three times from 'K. Hatooti & Co. Ltd' to 'Seiko Corporation' in 1983, it prospered. And in 2001, Seiko officially became a holding company offering versatile products. The holding company was officially named 'Seiko Holding Corporation' back in 2007.

The Reasonability and the Market

The Japanese giant Seiko to the date remains focused on one aspect, that is innovation. They've manufactured everything from affordable quartz watches to luxurious classics. As Seiko made sure that their watches are reachable to a larger number of people. The price of most masterpieces is reasonable and they produce watches with better features as compared to the competitor brand watches at a similar price.

Seiko has been able to provide excellence for the capital they are demanding. Prices vary according to the value and quality of the products. It is true that Seiko's luxury watches can cost you a bit, but it is guaranteed that Seiko charges what their watches deserve.

Although Seiko watches excel in most of the departments somehow they are still underrated and not recognized as the other Swiss watch giants. That doesn't mean they don't have a market. Including the United States and major countries of the world, Seiko watches are widely accepted and because they provide robust quality, outdoor wristband classics at reasonable prices, the audience doesn't hesitate to buy Seiko watches.

The reason they are not recognized the same as some giant Swiss made watches manufacturers is that they don't have such brand value. It would seem strange, but because they are not as expensive as their competitors their watches lack behind in market value. Those who can afford a Swiss made Rolex won't go for a Japanese made Seiko, even if they can get the same features at a minimal price.
