History of Michael Kors Fashion House
Michael David Kors began his career in the late 1970s as a salesman at Lothar’s retail boutique on 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan. During this period, he also started designing dresses. Impressed by his talent, Dawn Mello, the creative director at Bergdorf Goodman at the time, invited Kors for creating a new dress collection for the American luxury department store.
His first collection under the Michael Kors label was launched at Bergdorf Goodman in 1981. Soon after the leaving the iconic American retail store, Kors began concentrating on the development of his own fashion label. In 1997, he was appointed as the Women's Ready-to-wear Designer of Celine, the French fashion house owned by LVMH. In 2003, the designer left the Parisian couture house to focus more on his eponymous brand.
Introduced in 1981, his first label Michael Kors Collection included luxury sportswear clothing for women. The award-winning designer launched the Michael Kors menswear in 2002 and the MICHAEL Michael Kors line for women in 2004.
To expand his fashion empire, Kors incorporated an asset company Michael Kors Holdings Limited in partnership with two prominent investors. His business group acquired the British haute couture house Jimmy Choo in 2017. The company changed its name to Capri Holdings Limited along with the successful acquisition of the Italian fashion empire Versace in December 2018.
Michael Kors has been honored with several awards for his outstanding contributions to the fashion industry and his philanthropic work.
In 2004, Michael Kors Holdings Limited signed a partnership with Fossil Group to design, develop and distribute watches under Michael Kors brand. In 2010, Fossil Group acquired the license for the jewellery collection. In 2014, both companies extended the partnership up to 2024.
