Orient Watches

A History of Orient Watches

When Shogoro Yoshida began his wholesale watch shop in Ueno, Taito, Tokyo in the year 1901, he sold imported pocket watches. It was a successful business, and he expanded it further in 1912 to produce gold watch cases. In 1920, the Tokyo Tokei Manufacturing company was inaugurated, which started producing wristwatches in 1934. It was shut down in 1949 due to the aftermath of World War II.

Yoshida’s watch-making company was reborn under the name Tama Keiki on 13th July 1950. It was renamed to Orient Watch Company, Ltd. in 1951. It continued production at a factory in Hino, Tokyo. The first Orient Star model was also sold in 1951. As the company gained momentum, several lines of watches were initiated and the business was expanded overseas.

From 2001, it was one of the three core companies of the Seiko Group when Seiko became a shareholder in Orient.

Luxury watches began to be produced under the Royal Orient watch line in 2003.

It became a completely owned subsidiary of Seiko Epson in 2009.

In 2020, the Orient Watch Co. celebrated its 70-year anniversary.

Why Orient is Loved

This indigenous watch brand of Japan truly encapsulates the thousands of years of self-discovery of Japan in the artistic spectrum. It is the heart of all the good things of beauty which can be gifted by Japan to the modern world. Traditional and luxury watches by Orient are apples of the eyes of the watch-loving masses.

Orient watches have manufacturing facilities and outlets all over the globe. Their biggest achievement has been manufacturing mechanical, primarily automatic watches, with custom in-house movements.

In the 1970’s, Orient mechanical watches suffered a setback owing to the introduction of quartz watches. The new type of watches were highly affordable and gained instant popularity. Most of the watch-making companies shifted to making quartz watches, but Orient retained its art of making mechanical watches. The Orient Tenbeat watch using Cal. 9980 was introduced in 1970, and the Orient automatic Cal. 46 series using Cal. 46940 started in 1971.

Today, Orient makes quartz, radio-controlled, digital and solar-powered watches alongside its trademark mechanical watches. Over the years the company has worked on improving the finesse and reliability of its mechanical timepieces. It stands unrivalled as a brand that makes its own components within an affordable price range.

Its best decision has perhaps been to never stray from its course of manufacturing the mainstream Orient mechanical watches. Its products range from low-end, affordable ones starting at 50 USD to top-notch, luxury pieces priced above 7000 USD.

Orient Star Royal watch is their prestigious flagship line of luxury mechanical watches. It caters to collectors and watch-enthusiasts perfectly.

Orient Mechanical watches cater to the tastes of all with its impressive and suave collection.
