Omega
Railmaster Watches
Omega launched three timepieces back in 1957 that would each go on to become icons of the watchmaking world These were the Seamaster 300, the Railmaster and the Speedmaster. Suddenly in 2017, Omega chose to release Railmaster 60th Anniversary editions of each model, and so the scene was ready for an amazing rerelease.
The 1957 Railmaster was supposed for use by those who worked near electrical fields. Though the modern model holds on to the day to day style of the initial one, the Master Chronometer 8806 movement can easily resist magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, a fact that would not have been realistic in 1957.
The first OMEGA Railmaster was made for railway staff or anyone who worked near to electrical fields. With the ability to withhold magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss, it enabled real precision for the owner. Due to its Master Chronometer mechanism, today’s Railmaster is 15 times stronger and can withstand fields up to 15,000 gauss.
With a 40 mm brushed stainless steel case and cone shaped crown, the Railmaster has a vertically-brushed grey or black dial, recessed hour-markers filled with "vintage" Super-LumiNova, a railway minute track, OMEGA’s "crosshair" symbol of precision, and a "lollipop" central seconds similar to the railways.
The Railmaster is fuelled by the anti-magnetic Master Chronometer Calibre 8806, which is put into place behind a wave-edged caseback that has an embossed Seahorse medallion. The NAIAD LOCK also holds the wording on the caseback nicely in place.
In homage to the hard-working denim jeans donned on the railroads, a special industrial model has been made with a vertically-brushed “blue jeans” dial. As well as a stainless steel bracelet, the watch is also available with a genuine blue denim NATO strap. Select your destination: Blue jeans dial with a stainless steel bracelet or denim NATO strap; Black dial with a stainless steel bracelet or a two-tone grey textile strap or a grey dial with a stainless steel bracelet or a brown leather NATO style strap.
Limited to 3,557 pieces, the new Railmaster is cased inside brushed and polished stainless steel and, like others in the collections, sports a striking black tropical dial complete with retro, recessed indexes filled with Super-LumiNova.
As with all of the watches within the series, the sapphire crystal and hesalite glass protecting all dials has a soft, laser engraved Omega logo, a vintage element that helps the entire piece to simply gush with sophistication.
All watches are delivered within a gorgeous presentation box that is directly inspired by the 1957 packaging, with there even being a Seahorse on the top. There’s also a pair of spare straps, a lovely touch from Omega that has leather and NATO options, as well as a mixing tool.
For those looking to get all three of these amazing watches, Omega has made a trilogy that is limited to just 557 pieces. Wonderfully made inside a Railmaster Swiss oak box, all three have the same limited edition numbers etched upon them. Furthermore, the box has a leather watch roll with no fewer than six spare straps, whilst there’s also a wooden spring bar tool for changing them.
In the end, all watches in this trilogy are a symbol of watchmaking in its own right. The fact that Omega wanted to reissue these highly adored after retro timepieces from what is a golden era of Swiss watchmaking talks to the brand’s adoration of the tastes of their adoring fans the world over.
