Introducing the New 2022 Rolex watches

Rolex has delighted its loyal patrons by introducing various new timepieces at this year’s Watches and Wonders event in Geneva. Among them, the most talked-about novelty is a GMT-Master II variant especially dedicated to left-handed customers. In addition to this, the brand has included several new references to its classic and professional lines. Let us explore the new models to the line-up of one of the most admired luxury brands in the world. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King Rolex Air King 126900Source from: rolex.com Air-King is an entry-level model of Rolex professional watch lineup. The Oyster Perpetual Air-King collection was introduced in 1958 as a graceful tribute to the golden days of aviation, the 1930s. The prominent features of this iconic series include minimalistic dial layout with three centrally placed hands and a compact case size with diameters, starting from 34mm. Made of steel, these Rolex watches are usually available with dial colors like black, blue, silver, white and salmon. Depending upon the variant, the dial features Baton-indices, Roman numerals, Arabic numbers or Indexes with 3, 6 and 9 digits. During watches and wonders 2022, the brand unveiled a modern generation of this timepiece. The new Rolex Air King (126900) is larger in comparison with its predecessors. It comes with a 40mm-diameter case made of Oystersteel. For the new model, the brand has carried out several design enhancements and technical updates. Presently available with a black lacquer dial, it houses a current generation self-winding movement (calibre 3230) with a power reserve of 70 hours. The dial spotlights a new and entirely different theme from the previous models. Firstly, it employs a triangular marker in place of the 12 o’clock hour-marker. Furthermore, Arabic numerals have been used for representing hour markers. Except 3, 6 and 9 digits, the remaining are displayed in minutes (5, 10, 20, 25, 35, 40, 50 and 55). This represents a perfect synthesis of symbolic designs of historic pilot watches and emblematic Rolex styles. It also spotlights a Mercedes-style hour-hand, a baton-shaped minutes-hand and a green-colored, lollipop seconds-hand. The new Air-King comes with an oyster-type bracelet. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 228239Source from: rolex.com The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date is the most prestigious line-up of the Swiss brand’s Classic range, popularly known as the President’s watch. This quintessential Rolex watch stands-out with its emblematic calendar display. This Rolex Daydate watch is available in precious metals only. Spotlighting fluted or gem-set bezels, they traditionally come with President Style Bracelets. Made of 18K gold (Everose, yellow or white) or platinum, this timepiece is presently available in two case sizes: 36mm and 40mm. The brand has recently released various new references from both 36mm and 40mm categories. A stand-out model is the Day Date 36 watch in platinum with gem-set bezel and an eye-catching ice blue dial adorned with 10 baguette-cut diamond hour markers. Also available are the two new 36mm Platinum versions with ice blue dial featuring Roman numeral hour-markers. Among these, first one features a fluted bezel and the second model boasts a gem-set bezel. Featuring fluted bezels, these latest additions offer a number of dial choices like ice blue, silver, bright black, bright blue, olive green, meteorite, diamond-paved, slate and white.   In addition to the above-mentioned platinum watches, Rolex has inducted several new references of Day Date 40 in yellow gold. The options include the dial variants like black, green, diamond-paved and onyx. They come with fluted or gem-set bezels. These new generation of Rolex Day Date watches are equipped with in-house Caliber 3255, a self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of 70 hours. A notable attraction among these was an array of floral-motif dial watches with 31mm case size. The eye-catching dial design of these new versions is inspired by the mild summer meadows. The brand is offering three distinct dial color choices – Azzurro-blue, Olive-green and Silver – for this new series. The Rolex Datejust 31 floral-motif dial watches are available in 18K gold and Rolesor versions. In this new series, the brand is providing three types of bracelets: Oyster, Jubilee and President. Two bezel options are also offered: fluted and diamond-set. These timepieces are driven by the Calibre 2236, the in-house developed a self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of 55 hours. Rolex GMT Master II 126720VTNRSource from: rolex.com GMT Master II is one of the most-admired icons in the modern world. The origins of this model date back to the mid-1950s. An ultimate reference of additional time-zone watches, Rolex GMT Master is a collector’s delight, with prices touching million dollars for some rare and historic pieces. Introduced in 1982, GMT Master II represents the second generation of Rolex GMT watches. The latest generation Rolex GMT Master II is driven by the manufacture caliber 3285, which provides a power reserve of 70 hours. Two stand-out features of this timepiece are a bi-directional rotating bezel and an extra hour-hand for monitoring additional time zones. Rolex has added an unexpected novelty this year in the form of a left-handed version of the GMT Master II. So far, this timepiece was made for right-handed persons only, with the crown at 3 o’clock as usual. Exhibited at Watches and Wonders 2022, the new variant with reference number 126720VTNR features the crown at 9 o’clock, making it easier for a left-handed person to operate it. 4. Watch Comparison: Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II

Watch Comparison: Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II

Introduction Both Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II belong to the Rolex Professional series, which also includes Air King, Cosmograph Daytona, Explorer, GMT Master II, Milgauss, Sea-Dweller and Submariner watches. As their names suggest, these luxury sports watches have been associated with sailing. Both of them possess their own distinctive features. Rolex has been manufacturing high-grade water-proof watches since the introduction of Oyster case technology in the 1920s. In 1953, the brand introduced the iconic Submariner diving watch. Released in 1992, the first Yacht-Master model (reference 16628) featured an 18K yellow gold case with 40mm diameter and 100m water resistance. Rolex Yacht-Master merges the outstanding characteristics of a tool watch with luxurious details. The first reference was inspired by the Submariner Date model ref. 16610 of the early 1990. Both used the same movement (caliber 3135), with a date indication at 3 o’ clock. The first Yacht Master 16628 came with 18K yellow gold rotating bezel, triple-lock crown, oyster bracelet and Cyclops lens over the date. Many Rolex enthusiasts consider Yacht-Master 40 as a luxurious avatar of Submariner. Subsequently, the brand has also introduced smaller versions of Yacht Masters. In 2007, the first Yacht-Master II watch was launched. Specially created for regatta competitions, it was the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown function using a mechanical memory. For this professional regatta chronograph, Rolex developed the self-winding caliber 4160. This timepiece has a 42.6mm in diameter case. In 2015, Rolex launched a Yacht Master rose gold model made of the proprietary alloy known as Everose gold. This variant is now available in two case sizes: 40mm and 37mm. The Rolex Yacht Master rose gold watch comes with an exclusively developed rubber strap known as Oysterflex. In 2017, Rolex unveiled the new generation Yacht-Master II in Oyster steel, with a 44mm diameter case and the caliber 4161. The most recent addition to this sailing watch family is the Yacht Master 42 with the 3235 movements. This model is available in 18K white and yellow gold versions. Yacht-Master Vs Yacht-Master II Yacht-Master 268621-0004 Yacht-Master II  116681-0002 (1) Case Yacht-Master is presently available in 37mm, 40mm and 42mm sizes whereas the new generation Yacht-Master II is offered in a 44mm case. Both variants have the Oyster case architecture, featuring a monobloc middle case, screw-down case back and winding crown. Water resistance rating is the same: 100 meters. The screwed-down crown is provided with triplock triple waterproofness system. Both models are fitted with sapphire crystal glasses. The Yacht-Master has a Cyclops lens over the date whereas the Rolex Yacht-Master 2 does not have this feature. (2) Bezel Bezels of Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II are rotatable. Some models come with Cerachrom bezel-inserts. The Rolex Yacht Master watch is available with bi-directional rotational countdown bezels. Made of platinum or 18K gold, the bezel features a raised 60-minute graduation and numerals. The Yacht-Master II watch comes with a bidirectional rotatable Ring Command bezel topped with moulded numerals (from 0 to 10) and Yacht-Master II inscription. The bezel of Yacht-Master with its 0-60 scale can be used for calculating elapsed time and it operates independently from the internal mechanism of the watch. However, Yacht-Master II’s bezel is linked with the movement. Known as the Ring Command bezel, it can be utilized for operating the regatta chronograph function. (3) Dial The dial of Yacht-Master is almost same as that of a submariner date watch. Quickly readable, it features shaped hour-markers (round, rectangular and triangle), three centre hands (hour, minute and seconds) and the date at 3 o’clock. The dial of Yacht-Master 2 is more elaborate yet easily decipherable. It has five hands. Four are centrally positioned on the centre of the dial, and the seconds hand is off-centered. The watch displays the countdown minute with the hand featuring a triangle pointer and the countdown seconds with the long spear-shaped hand. (4) Movement Because of the dissimilarity of the functional features, different types of movements have been employed. Both Yacht Master 40 and 42mm versions are equipped with the self-winding calibre 3235, which is the same movement used with Datejust 36 and Datejust 41 watches. It has a power reserve of 70 hours. The 37mm variant of Yacht-Master is driven by Calibre 2236, that is a self-winding movement with a power reserve of 55 hours. Both 3235 and 2236 have the same time display features: hour, minute, centre seconds and the date at 3 o’clock. The Yacht-Master II is equipped with Calibre 4161. It is a specially developed self-winding regatta chronograph movement. In addition to basic time display, this caliber offers programmable countdown functions for calculating elapsed time during regatta sailing competitions. It has a power reserve of 72 hours. (5) Operating elements All Yacht-Master watches feature a single crown at 3 o’clock for manually winding the movement and for setting the date and time. On the other hand, Yacht-Master II has two push-buttons at 2H and 4H for operating the regatta chronograph function in addition to the crown at 3 o’clock. (6) Bracelet/Strap Rolex Yacht-Master comes with the choice of Oyster type bracelet and Oysterflex strap whereas the Yacht-Master II is presently available with an Oyster bracelet only. Summary Rolex Yacht Master watches are available in 18K gold (Everose, yellow or white) and bi-metal (Oystersteel with gold or platinum) versions. Equipped with in-house self-winding movements, these luxury sailing watch models are superlative chronometers (certified by COSC plus Rolex certification after casing), with a superb chronometric accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day. The hands and indices are enhanced with highly legible Chromalight, a proprietary luminescent coating that offers a long-lasting blue luminescence. Ideal for sailing and other aquatics activities, all Yacht Masters are water-resistant up to 100 meters. Rolex is currently offering the Yacht Master 37 and 40mm models in Everose gold, Oystersteel with Everose gold and Oystersteel with platinum. The 42mm model is available with 18K white gold and yellow gold cases. Yacht Master is also available with diamond-set versions. The Yacht-Master II is offered in Oystersteel, Bi-metal (Oystersteel + Everose gold) and 18K yellow gold. The approximate Rolex HK retail price range of the Yacht Master collection starts at HK$100,000. The cost of gem-set versions often goes above HK$1,000,000.

At the current Rolex catalog, the Air King watch is among the cheapest Rolex watch models. With its comparatively low price marking, the Air King Rolex watch makes an amazing entry point to the world of Rolex.  Exceptional Quality Despite its lower price tag, its quality and performance sure do not lag behind any other Rolex models. Rolex has been updating this collection with advanced materials and technologies. Its current model is well crafted with the exclusive Oystersteel and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The watch is anti-magnetic and water-resistant up to a depth of 100 meters. Furthermore,  the Air King is Rolex Superlative Chronometer as well as COSC certified.  Unique dial design Additionally, this watch is also ideal for watch lovers who are genuinely into its design. The current model Air King 116900 features a drastically updated design from the previous models. This new watch maintains its iconic Air King 369 hour markers while adding the Explorer’s Mercedes hour hand.  The dial is also highlighted with playful coloured details like the bright green colored second hand, the yellow-colored Rolex crown as well as green-colored “Rolex” brand name. The Air King’s dial is a very unique, standout design among others in Rolex’s sport lineup. History of Rolex Air King Rolex Air King has a deep relationship with the military Air Force. During and after World War II, Rolex released a handful of the “Air” pilot watch models for the British Royal Air Force. The Rolex Air King was released after a series of Air models, the Air Lion, Air Tiger and Air Giant, and outlasted them.  This Rolex pilot watch was first introduced in 1945 with the reference 4925. It features a 34 mm stainless steel case with smooth bezel, a cream dial and Arabic numerals for even hours. The early Air King models all housed a manual wound Hunter movement that was similar to other stainless steel Rolex Oyster models.  Evolution of Rolex Air King Watches As one of Rolex’s oldest watch models still being listed in the catalog, the Air-King has evolved dramatically over its long history while retaining its fundamental style.  Rolex Air King 5500 This Rolex 5500 Air King watch is considered as a representative vintage Air King model in the current secondary market. It was released in 1957 as the successor of the previous reference 6652 released in 1953. The watch is equipped with a 34 mm stainless steel case, a domed bezel and a matching Oyster steel bracelet. It featured a three-hand creamy silver dial with stick hour markers.  Air King 5500 This watch has soon become an iconic model in the collection that is rare and desirable among the vintage watch collectors.  Rolex Air King 14000 In 1989, Rolex introduced the five-digit Reference 14000 as an update model to the Air King 5500. It was another new approach for the collection after 37 years. This model featured the later-iconic Arabic numerals at the 3-6-9 hour markers, with stick markers in between. This Arabic numeral version had instantly proved popular with customers. It also featured the most advanced Rolex caliber 3000 movement at the time.  Air King 14000 There was also a variant with reference 14010 that featured the “engine turned bezel.” At the time the engine turned bezel was a popular alternative for the Rolex lovers who didn’t prefer the flashy fluted bezel that was on many Datejusts models. In 2000, both the Air King 14000 and Air King 14010 were updated with the newer in-house caliber 3130 movement.  Rolex Air King 114200 In 2007, Rolex replaced the 14000 models with six-digit references, the 114200 models. These new references of Rolex Air-King maintained a 34mm Oystersteel case with the scratch-proof sapphire crystal and a matching Oystersteel bracelet. The robust bracelet was updated to solid end-links. The Air King 114200 was fitted with a smooth bezel while its variants, the Air King 114210 had an engine-turned bezel and the Air King 114234 featured a fluted white gold bezel. Air King White Steel 114234 White The generation of Rolex Air King was the first models that were COSC certified in the collection. Led by the Rolex 114200, these models are updated with a “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” marking on their dials above the 6 o’clock.  Rolex Air King 116900 After two years of discontinuation, Rolex released a new Air-King Reference 116900 in 2016. At first glance, this Rolex Air King 2016 version obviously varies from the previous models in terms of design aesthetics. Instead of the old 34mm monochromatic Air-King case, this new generation of the Air-King features a larger 40mm Oystersteel case, which is the same case as the Rolex Milgauss 116400. This Rolex 116900 is also powered by the same in-house movement 3131 Caliber with anti-magnetism features with the Milgauss watch.  Air King Black Dial 116900 Black The brand has placed a relatively playful dial on the new Air King watch. While featuring the iconic large 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, the dial is fitted with a bright green second hand. The brand logo and name is also placed in a bold execution that the Rolex crown logo is enemaled in sharp yellow and “ROLEX” is in green. It has become a standing out characteristic of the Air King model.  No matter if you prefer the simpler classic older models or go for the newest bold model, the Air-King is a great choice as a Rolex entry watch. It’s definitely one of the best solid starter Rolex watches, being lower priced than other sports models in the brand. Holding more than 75 years of history behind it, the Rolex Air King has proven its value and market as an important part of the brand amongst the longest running Rolex collections.

  7. Daytona Rolex : An In-Depth Review of The Series’ Iconic Models

Daytona Rolex : An In-Depth Review of The Series’ Iconic Models

Introduction Daytona Rolex is the most admired mechanical luxury sports chronograph ever made. Named after the iconic Daytona Beach racetrack in Florida, this timepiece is an ultimate micro-engineering marvel dedicated to endurance motor racing. Introduced in 1963, Daytona is not the first chronograph watch to come out from the house of Rolex. The company has been producing chronographs since the 1930s. Many of the historical models are now highly sought-after by seasoned collectors. History and Evolution Before introducing the Daytona collection, Rolex had produced a number of chronograph watches equipped with customized Valjoux movements. Among them, reference 6238 is known as Pre-Daytona. In 1963, the brand introduced a manual winding mechanical chronograph watch featuring an external tachymeter bezel made of steel. This timepiece with reference number 6239 established the foundation of the Rolex Daytona collection. Known as Cosmograph, this stainless steel watch was released without the DAYTONA inscription on the dial.  In the mid-1960s, Rolex began capitalizing on DAYTONA name on the dial of Cosmograph to mark the brand’s partnership with the legendary international speedway as its official timekeeper. (1) First Generation The first generation of Daytona Rolex watches is comprised of various references from 1963 to the late 1980s. These watches house modified Valjoux 72 hand-wound mechanical movements. The notable references from the Original series are 6239, 6240, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264, and 6265. All these Daytonas feature stainless steel case measuring 37mm diameter, acrylic front glass, steel case back and tachymeter bezel. Some models have a tachymeter scale engraved on the metallic bezel. Certain references feature a black Plexiglas tachymeter bezel-insert instead of the engraved steel bezel. Rolex Daytona 6239 (2) Second Generation Although the world’s first self-winding chronograph was introduced in 1969, Rolex had to wait until 1988 to update Daytona with an automatic calibre. Rolex procured the Zenith “El Primero” 3019PHC calibers and then extensively customized them to create a new calibre family designated Calibre 4030.The second-generation Daytona chronographs are equipped with this self-winding movement. The first Daytona model to be fitted with the Calibre 4030 was the reference 16520. These Rolex ‘Zenith’ Daytona watches feature a 40 mm diameter case mounted with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal instead of acrylic glass. The watches from the second series can be distinguished from their five-digit reference numbers, for example, 16520 (stainless steel), 16523 (stainless steel and yellow gold), and 16528 (yellow gold). (3) Third Generation In 2000, Rolex introduced a state-of-the-art self-winding mechanical movement (4130) to propel the Daytona family to new horizons. Entirely designed and manufactured in-house, this column-wheel and vertical clutch chronograph calibre incorporates innovations like Paramagnetic blue PARACHROM hairspring, Large balance wheel with variable inertia, High-precision regulating via four gold MICROSTELLA nuts and the Traversing balance bridge. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this 44 jewel movement provides an exceptional autonomy of 72 hours. The Daytonas equipped with the self-winding calibre 4130 belong to the third generation, which uses a six-digit reference number system. The first creation from this series was the reference 116520 Rolex Daytona chronograph, which features a 40mm diameter 904L grade stainless steel case and an engraved metal bezel with a 400 km/hr tachymeter scale. Rolex has been regularly expanding the third series by adding new references in Oystersteel, Bimetal (steel + gold), Gold and Platinum. The brand has also introduced new versions outfitted with ceramic Cerachrom Tachymeter bezel. Not to forget the gem-set Daytonas that instantly captured the attention of glitterati. The most recently released Rolex Daytona 2021 collection is comprised of meteorite dial versions featuring 18-carat gold cases. Iconic Daytona Models Since its official launch in 1963, the Rolex Daytona collection has been evolved tremendously through three distinct generations and several references. These valuable watches are available in steel, gold, platinum and bi-metal (steel and gold) versions. In this page, we present some iconic references from the world’s most-admired mechanical luxury sports chronograph collection.  (1) Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’  The iconic Rolex Daytona paul newman dial watches belong to the first generation. 8. A Complete Guide to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual

A Complete Guide to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual

With watches becoming bulkier and more feature-rich with every update, there is something about a classic analog watch that turns heads. The Oyster Perpetual Rolex brings back the simplicity and elegance of a classic wristwatch. It has none of the fuss commonly seen in modern timepieces – no date window, rotating bezel, or chronograph. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual brings back the glory of the original Rolex watches.  Rolex Oyster Perpetual and the Rolex Submariner also use the brand name of ‘Oyster Perpetual‘ but these two watches are not simplistic and classic like the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. With Oyster Perpetual, Rolex has carved a niche for classic analog watches.   An affordable Rolex The Rolex Perpetual is not only a great watch, but it is also at the lower price point within the premium watch market. The Oyster Perpetual Date is another great option that is also at a lower price point compared to other Rolex watches. For watch lovers and collectors looking to make an entry into the world of premium watches, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a great choice.  History of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Two in-house Rolex inventions lie at the heart of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The first is its distinct design and aesthetics. Another key invention was the self-winding perpetual movement. The Oyster Perpetual originates from the 1926 Rolex Oyster collection. It was the first watch collection in the world with water resistance. The name of the line comes from its case design, which is like the shell of an oyster. Special tools are needed to open the case of the Oyster Perpetual.  Developments in 1931 gave the Oyster Perpetual its present shape and form. Rolex came up with the self-winding movement this year. This movement got its power from the continuous (perpetual) movement of the wearers’ wrist.  The Oyster Perpetual collection was a mega success from the very beginning. Its success led to many other lines being named with the prefix of ‘Perpetual’. The term itself is now reminiscent of Rolex‘s path-breaking technological innovation.  For a long time, the Oyster Perpetual was predominantly positioned as a women’s watch. The main reason behind this was the relatively smaller case diameter of Rolex Oyster Perpetuals. Case diameter within the series used to be 26 mm, 31 mm, 34 mm, and 36 mm. Traditionally smaller case diameters are associated with women’s watches. Among these models, the Oyster Perpetual 36 was a top pick for many buyers and watch lovers.  Oyster Perpetual 39 114300-0005 Rolex Oyster Perpetual in the 2000s In the middle of 2000 came the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual models with six-digit reference numbers. The watches from the 2000 production line are still in the market. These watches came with a case diameter of 34 mm. The line began to be known as Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 34. It was different from the previous lines of Oyster perpetual. Though it came with a case diameter of 34 mm, the case was designed to appear larger. There was also slight modification in the straps, making them more functional.  Oyster Perpetual 34 114200 Green 2015 and the launch of Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 mm In 2015 came the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39. With a case diameter of 39 mm, the line appealed to both men and women. Men, particularly, found the increased case diameter to be more masculine. In no time, the watch became a favorite among men. With another round of design upgrades, the watch was made available in 5 color options. Despite more color options, purists and traditionalists loved the classic black and white dials the most. The 39 mm diameter was a game-changer in every way for Rolex. It was big enough for big wrists but not so big that those with smaller wrists would avoid it. The watch has a simple, elegant style, much like the other Oyster Perpetual models.   Oyster Perpetual 39 114300/Purple Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 From 26 mm to 41 mm, Rolex had a significant shift in case diameter. However, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 mm further expanded the market of Oyster Perpetual. With 7 dial color options, this Rolex Oyster Perpetual 2020 watch brought more options while painting the hallmark simplicity in design. While some saw the jump in case diameter as drastic, it did catch the attention of watch lovers. Most were happy to find their favorite watch in bigger case size. The color options also played a key role in the watch’s success. Its bright and lively colors were called ‘Stella-inspired’. While purists held to the classic dials, the newer ones were a work of art in their own rights. Bright colors like green, blue, yellow, and red gave the watch a revamped appearance while preserving its signature simplicity. Apart from color variations, Rolex did not do anything to the watch in terms of upgrades and modifications. Rolex‘s caliber 3230 powers the Oyster Perpetual 41. It is the same movement that powers the legendary Rolex Submariner. The key highlight of this movement is enhanced precision and more powerful battery performance. It is also called a Superlative Chronometer movement, meaning that the watch is ideal for everyday wear.  Oyster Perpetual 41 124300-0006 Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 2020 2020 had been a good year for Rolex and the brand’s connoisseurs. Apart from the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41, the company also launched a renewed Rolex Submariner line. While there is a lot of talk about smaller case diameters making a comeback, Rolex is set to perpetuate the dominance of big cases. Apart from the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41, the only time Rolex had a 41 mm case diameter was in the Rolex Datejust 41. In 2020, Rolex has 3 different lines with 41 mm case diameter watches. It also gives a glimpse as to what the future of the premium watch segment holds. Chances are, bigger case diameters will continue to dominate the premium and dress watch segment.  Oyster Perpetual 41mm 124300-0002 Rolex Oyster Perpetual for Ladies As mentioned earlier, the Oyster Perpetual was predominantly seen as a ladies’ watch. However, there were indeed models specifically designed for women. The key feature of their ladies’ watch was a small case diameter of 26 mm. Like their counterparts, these watches are also available in different color options and strap options. The inclusion of all types of watches makes the Rolex Oyster Perpetual a complete premium watch collection. Oyster Perpetual 276200-0004

  9. Rolex Explorer: History and Buying Guide

Rolex Explorer: History and Buying Guide

Introduction The Rolex Explorer line has been dedicated to adventurers who explore harsh terrains like mountains, caves and snow-filled Polar Regions. Interestingly, this famed collection was debuted in 1953, the same year that marked the successful conquest of the Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. Belong to the Professional range of Rolex, Explorer remains underrated because of the overwhelming popularity of icons like Daytona, Submariner and GMT Master II. In comparison with other Rolex watches, the Explorer line produced a minimal number of references since its introduction in 1953. The collection contains two distinct ranges: Explorer (sometimes refers as Rolex explorer 1) and Explorer II. Considered as the most undervalued Rolex sports model, Explorer is an excellent choice for beginners who love to collect spectacular timepieces made by the world’s top luxury watch brands. As on date, the Explorer family remains an influential collection from the iconic Swiss company. History and Evolution of Explorer  Rolex Explorer Black Dial Stainless Steel Oyster Bracelet Automatic Men’s Watch 214270BKASO 1953, Rolex launched reference 6350, the first Oyster Perpetual Explorer watch. Meant for adventures and explorers, this timepiece featured 36mm diameter ‘Oyster’ case in stainless steel, self-winding movement and black dial. The other version produced during the 1950s was the reference 6150, in which some models do not display ‘Explorer’ name on the dial. In the 1950s, the reference 6610 was also introduced. This Explorer watch is equipped with Caliber 1030 self-winding movement. 1963, Rolex introduced the reference 1016, with earlier production models equipped with Caliber 1560 and later batches with caliber 1570. It is one of the longest produced Rolex watches. The reference 1016 is the first Explorer with 100m water resistant. Its ancestors had 50 meters water resistance. In 1989, the ref. 14270 was launched. The ref. 14270 is an Explorer model with 36mm diameter case, sapphire crystal glass, glossy black dial and caliber 3000 self-winding movement.  In 2001, Rolex introduced reference 114270, a new Explorer watch with caliber 3130. It was the last Explorer model with the 36mm case. In 2010, the reference 214270 was released. This new generation explorer watch features a 39mm stainless steel case, black dial and caliber 3132. It has two dial versions: MK1 and MK2. The MK1 dial variants contain non-luminous 3-6-9 markers and MK2 versions feature luminous 3-6-9 markers. History and Evolution of Explorer II  Rolex Explorer II White Dial Stainless Steel Oyster Bracelet Automatic Men’s Watch 216570WSO (White) In 1971, Rolex introduced Ref.1655, a new Explorer watch equipped with a fixed 24h bezel, date window at 3o’ clock and an additional hour-hand. With two separate hour hands, the timepiece provided the precise tracking of day-time and the corresponding night time, which is very helpful for speleologists, spelunkers and miners. This 39mm, stainless steel model marked the launch of the popular Rolex Explorer II watches.  In 1985, the brand replaced the model 1655 with the reference 16550, a new Explorer II watch with 40mm diameter steel case and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand. Equipped with the Caliber 3085, this Explorer II was made available in black and white dial versions. In 1989, the reference 16570 was introduced. Equipped with the Caliber 3185, the ref.16570 replaced the Rolex Explorer II reference 16550. The Rolex Explorer II 16570 models produced from 2007 to 2011 were outfitted with the caliber 3186. In 2011, Rolex launched reference 216570, the latest Explorer II watch with 42mm diameter stainless steel case featuring large crown guards and wide lugs. Equipped with the Caliber 3187, this new reference is available in black and white color versions. Design Highlights Rolex Explorer II White Dial Stainless Steel Oyster Bracelet Automatic Men’s Watch 216570WSO (Black) The Rolex Explorer watch boasts some impressive design details. The most important among them is the so-called Explorer dial, which is a stand-out feature of all Explorer watch models. It traditionally refers to a specific dial layout with numeral hour markers at 3,6 and 9, inverted triangle hour-marker at 12 and rectangular indices for the remaining hour-markers. This minimalistic dial with highly legible hour-markers amply provides a clear view of time display along with the large, luminescent hands. Most of the Explorer references feature Mercedes hour-hand, which is a characteristic attribute of Rolex professional watches. All Explorer watches use Oyster case design for ensuring optimum water resistance. Both robust and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is fitted with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which typically prevents accidental opening. The Easylink comfort extension link allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. Its self-winding movement (the Caliber 3132) is a certified Swiss chronometer and provides 48 hours power reserve. Water resistant to 100 meters, the Explorer watch incorporates Monobloc middle case, screw-down case back, Screw-down crown with Twinlock double waterproofness system and Scratch-resistant sapphire glass. The new generation Explorer features the proprietary Chromalight lume, which emits a long-lasting blue glow. Explorer Vs Explorer II Known for their sober and graceful lines, all Explorer (Rolex Explorer I) watches maintain the classic ‘Time Only’ layout, with three centre hands. Introduced in 1971, the Explorer II is more functional because it also displays the date and second time-zone. In comparison with Explorer, the Explorer II watch additionally features a fixed bezel with 24H graduations and an extra hour-hand to track a second time-zone. The present generation Explorer (ref. 214270) has 39mm case and houses the calibre 3132 self-winding movement whereas the latest Explorer II watch has 42mm diameter case, with the Caliber 3187 beating inside. Popular Explorer Models Among all the Rolex Explorers produced to this date, the reference 1016 is the best-selling model. It undoubtedly enjoyed a long production run starting from 1963 to 1989. The references like 14270 and 114270 as well as the current production model 214270 are equally popular. The historic references like 6350, 6150 and 6610 are the most valued Explorer watches in the Vintage watch market. Buying Tips At present, Rolex offers the Explorer model 214270 with a black dial. All other models introduced prior to these references have been discontinued. Introduced in 2010, the new generation Explorer watch (ref. 214270) comes with a 39mm diameter case made of 904L stainless steel. As on date, it is the only Explorer I watch with a 39mm case. All its ancestors have 36mm cases. Its polished, smooth bezel radiates the vintage appeal of the Explorer family. Driving this timepiece is the calibre 3132, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Before proceeding to purchase the reference 214270, you should be aware of two types of dials. The watches that produced until 2016 have small minute-hand and non-luminous 3-6-9 hour markers. Whatever may be the reason behind it, the length of minute-hand was not proportional with the dial size. This dial style is known as MK1. In 2016, Rolex replaced this dial with MK2, which has luminous 3-6-9 hour markers and longer minute hand.  Some customers prefer the Explorer with MK1 dial for its unusual yet classy look. The customers, who love the original design codes of the collection, favor MK2 dial versions.  Presently, the selling price of MK1 is than the MK2 variant. The retail price of a Rolex Explorer 2016 model with MK2 dial is approximately HK $89,000.

Datejust 41 126333 Black Jubilee A Quick Look at History and Evolution The Datejust collection boasts an impressive legacy of more than six decades. In 1945, Rolex celebrated its 40th anniversary. To mark this historical milestone, the brand launched reference 4467, an Oyster watch with a date display. This wristwatch featured an 18-carat yellow gold Oyster case, topped with a fluted bezel. It was the world’s very first self-winding wristwatch to feature a date window that would automatically change over at midnight. The very first Datejust was fitted with the Jubilee bracelet, which was introduced during the 40th anniversary (jubilee) of Rolex in 1945. Originally created for the Datejust watch, this bracelet has been used in numerous Rolex models. The Datejust models are also available with Oyster and President Bracelets. In the 1950s, Rolex added stainless steel (reference 5030) and Rolesor (reference 5031) versions of Datejust. In 1955, Rolex upgraded these wristwatches with the patented Cyclops magnification lens on the acrylic glass over the date display. Before that, all Datejust watches were fitted with normal acrylic glass. Subsequently, the brand introduced several new references with upgraded self-winding movements. In the late 1950s, Rolex introduced the 16xx series and in the late 1970s, 160xx series was launched. In 1988, Rolex unveiled 162xx series with Caliber 3035. This is the first Datejust series to feature sapphire crystal instead of acrylic glass. Interestingly, all of these references steadfastly maintained the case diameter of 36mm, just like the first Datejust watch. In 2009, Rolex introduced Datejust ii, a new edition featuring a 41mm diameter case and equipped with the calibre 3136 self-winding movement. Initially, the Rolex oyster perpetual Datejust II was introduced in Yellow Rolesor (116333) and White Rolesor (116334) references. In 2012, a 904L stainless steel version (116300) was added. In 2016, Rolex introduced the Datejust 41, the latest 41mm model equipped with the calibre 3235 self-winding movement. All modern Datejust watches are 100m water resistant and houses Superlative Chronometer-certified mechanical self-winding movements. All of them are equipped with Oyster case, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over the date, screw-down crown with Twinlock double waterproofness system and screw-down case back. Datejust 36 Automatic Black Dial Oystersteel Men’s Watch 126200-0003 Buying Tips As on date, the price range of the Datejust collection typically starts at approximately HK$ 51,940 for men’s Oyster steel versions and around HK$ 50,785 for women’s models with same specifications. The cost of Rolesor, Gold and Gem-set models are higher than entry-level 904L watches. These prices are subject to market fluctuations and local taxes. The retail price of a brand-new Datejust watch varies depending upon certain parameters, which are appended below. (a) Material and case dimensions The type of material used is always an important factor in deciding the selling price of a brand-new timepiece. For example, to purchase a Datejust in solid gold, you should have more cash than it required for a stainless steel model with similar specifications. At present, Rolex offers Datejust watches in Steel (904L), Rolesor (Steel and Gold), Yellow gold, Pink Gold and White Gold. The case size is also a major price determining aspect. Naturally, the large size (41mm) model with similar specifications costs higher than its smaller counter parts. For men, the least expensive datejust watch is the 36mm steel model (126200) with smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet. The retail price of this watch is approximately HK$54,150. The Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 (126300) with similar features costs around HK$67,150. The Datejust 31 for women (278240) with 904L steel case, smooth bezel, Oyster bracelet and non-set dial costs approximately HK$55,360. As expected, the Datejust Rolesor versions are more expensive than their siblings in solid 904L steel. For example, the Rolex Datejust 36 Yellow Rolesor model (116203) with smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet costs approximately HK$ 78,320. The Rolex Datejust 41 Yellow Rolesor model with similar specifications has a price of approximately HK$87,030. Moreover, the price of an Everose Rolesor version is typically higher than a Yellow Rolesor Datejust watch with similar characteristics. At present, Rolex is not offering any 18-carat gold Datejust versions both in mid-size (34mm and 36mm) and large-size (41mm) categories. However, in the 31mm case category for women, the brand provides a broad selection of white gold, yellow gold and Everose gold watch models. The 31mm Datejust watch in gold offers several variants with attractive choices of smooth, fluted and Gem-set bezels. The 31mm version is also available with the choice of Oyster and President Bracelets. The Datejust 31 gold models come with a high price range than its siblings in 904L steel or Rolesor. Datejust 31 Stainless Steel Automatic Dark Grey Roman Dial Ladies Watch 278240-0015 (b)Bezel design The Datejust collection offers timepieces with three types of bezel options: Smooth, Fluted and Gem-set. The price of the Datejust watch differs with respect to the type and material of the bezel. Usually, versions with a fluted bezel are more expensive than the similar models with a smooth bezel. In the Datejust collection, Rolex uses solid gold fluted bezels irrespective of the case material. The models featuring 904 steel case and 18 carat white gold fluted bezel are known as white Rolesor versions. The 41mm steel Datejust model with 18 carat white gold fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet (126334) costs approximately HK$79,860. Obviously, the price is higher than that of a Datejust 41mm steel variant featuring smooth bezel, which costs approximately HK$67,150. The Datejust collection offers fluted bezel variants in 31, 36 and 41mm cases. Among them, both the Yellow Rolesor and the Everose Rolesor variants are costlier than the White Rolesor versions. As expected, the Gem-set bezel versions are more expensive than both smooth-bezel and fluted-bezel versions. (c) Dial design  Rolex offers five dial categories for the Datejust collection: Light, Colored, Dark, Gem-set and Diamond-paved. The light dial options typically include colors like white, mother-of-pearl, sun dust, silver and etc. The dark dial category offers colors like black, grey and slate. In the ‘Colored Dial’ category, you will find dial colors like Champagne, Aubergine, Bright blue, Mint green, Malachite, Olive green, Rose, Pink, Chocolate and Azzurro Blue and etc. The Datejust watches with semi-precious stones (mother-of-pearl, malachite and etc.), gem-set dials and diamond-paved dials are more expensive than those with the standard dials. It should be noted that within the regular dial category, the Rolex Date-just watches featuring diamond-set hour-markers are costlier than the similar models with non-set classic, Arabic or Roman hour markers. For instance, the Datejust 41 Everose Rolesor model with fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet and chocolate colored dial with diamond hour-markers has a retail price of approximately HK$123,150, In the same time, the same reference featuring classic hour markers costs HK$108,679. For instance, the Datejust 41 Stainless Steel model with fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet retails at approximately HK$84,070 where as its Oyster bracelet variant costs HK$79,860. Presently, the President style bracelet is available only for the gold watches from the Datejust 31 series for women. The Datejust 31 gold models are also available with the Oyster bracelet. Rolex Submariner: One of The Best Dive Watches

One of the most successful diving watches ever made, the Rolex Submariner enjoys a grand, unrivalled heritage that tracing back to the 1950s. Founded by Hans Wilsdorf in 1905, Rolex has been an industry leader in the manufacturing of water-proof and shock-proof watches. In 1926, the brand introduced Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch in the world. In 1927, young British professional swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster watch when she swam across the English Channel. This historical achievement helped Rolex to successfully market its newly inducted water-proof watches.   The commercial launch of Submariner in 1953 represents the iconic Swiss watch company’s first step into the world of diving. The first Submariner was capable to withstand the pressures up to 100 meters depth. In 1954, Rolex launched a new reference with 200 meters water resistance. Before achieving the existing standard of 300 meters water resistance, Rolex had made numerous Submariner watches with 100m or 200m depth rating.  The Rolex Submariner family includes several references of ‘Date’ and ‘Non-date’ models. Additionally, most of the references include numerous variants, based on Case material, Dial color/type, Texts on the dial, Style of hands and markers, Lume material and more. History and Evolution 1953, Rolex created Submariner, the first diving watch with 100 meters (330 feet) water resistance. At that time, the brand achieved this incredible water resistance rating by integrating a rugged ‘Oyster’ case, screwed-down winding crown and a thick acrylic glass. Among the first Submariner models, 6204 and 6205 were tested for waterproofness of 100 meters. The reference 6200 was the first Submariner with 200 meters water resistance. Both 6200 and 6205 featured the so-called ‘Mercedes’ hour hand, which became a hallmark of all Submariners produced thereafter. Among the first-generation submariners, the models with crown size of 6mm or less are known as ‘Small Crown’ submariners and those with 8mm crown are identified as ‘Big Crown’ submariners. Equipped with automatic movements, all first-generation submariners came with 37mm diameter case in stainless steel and highly legible dial with luminous hands for displaying the hour, minute and seconds. Their rotating outer-bezel features a triangle mark at the 0/60 position and minutes markers for recording the ‘time elapsed’ during diving.  In 1959, Rolex unveiled a new submariner (reference 5512) with 40mm diameter case in stainless steel and the 7mm crown. This reference also feature crown-guards, a stand-out element of all Submariner models produced thereafter. In 1966, Rolex introduced reference 1680, the first Submariner with date display. This 40mm diameter self-winding watch features stainless steel case, bi-directional bezel and acrylic crystal glass. The brand also added a yellow gold (1680/8) date version. All the above submariner date models were 200m water resistant. In the 1970s, Rolex developed the Triplock winding crown, a patented triple waterproofness system designed especially for its diving watches. Subsequently, the brand increased the Submariner’s water resistance to 300 metres (1,000 feet). In 1978, Rolex introduced the ref.16800, the first submariner date with a water resistance of 300m. This reference came with a flat sapphire crystal instead of acrylic glass. In 1988, Rolex introduced the first Submariner watch with 904L stainless steel case. In 1990, the first no-date Submariner to be fitted with sapphire crystal and Triplock crown was launched. During this period, Rolex introduced unidirectional bezels for its diving watches.  Rolex Submariner 116618LNIn 2008, the brand introduced Cerachrom bezel insert, which is more scratch-proof and UV-resistant than the metal bezel inserts. The first submariner models to be equipped with the proprietary ceramic bezels were 116618LN (yellow gold version with black dial and black bezel), 116618LB (yellow gold version with blue dial and blue bezel) and 116619LB (white gold version with blue dial and blue bezel). Introduced in 2010, the Rolex Submariner 116610 is the first 904L stainless steel version with Cerachrom bezel insert. All Submariner watches are equipped with the chronometer certified self-winding movements. Since 1953, Rolex has produced several references based on the calibers used. Most of the movements were chronometer certified. The latest generation submariners feature in-house developed self-winding movements, made in accordance with the ‘Superlative Chronometer’ certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. New Generation Submariners Rolex Submariner 124060-0001 In 2020, Rolex launched reference 124060, a 41mm diameter version of the classic non-date submariner in 904L stainless steel. Equipped with Superlative Chronometer certified Calibre 3230 self-winding movement, this timepiece has a power reserve of 70 hours. It features a black-lacquer dial and a unidirectional rotational bezel with black Cerachrom insert. In 2020, Rolex announced the launch of a new generation Submariner Date with 41mm diameter case and COSC-certified Calibre 3235 self-winding movement with 70 hours power reserve. Rolex Submariner 126610LN-0001The rolex submariner 2020 edition includes seven ‘Date’ variants. The first two models have 904L stainless steel case, black dial and Cerachrom bezel insert in green (126610LV) or Black (126610LN). The third variant (126619LB) features an 18ct white gold case, black dial and blue Cerachrom bezel insert. The new-generation line up also includes two yellow Rolesor versions – 126613LB (with blue Cerachrom bezel and a royal blue dial) and 126613LN (with black Cerachrom bezel and black dial). Finally, two yellow gold variants complete the list: 126618LB (blue Cerachrom bezel and royal blue dial) and 126618LN (black Cerachrom bezel and black dial). Popular Submariner Models Within the submariner family, a number of references became extremely popular and enjoyed long production runs. Due to various reasons, some references were produced for short durations only. Introduced in 1989, the rolex submariner 16610 is considered as the most popular submariner model. Equipped with caliber Cal. 3135, this submariner date watch in 904L stainless steel enjoyed a long production run (from 1989 to 2010). Water resistant to 300 meters, this model features a black dial, sapphire crystal glass and unidirectional rotating bezel. The rolex submariner black (reference 116610, date version with ceramic bezel) is equally a best-selling model. Rolex 16610 Hulk Nicknamed ‘HULK’, the rolex submariner green (reference 116610lv) is another popular model from the submariner collection. This version features green Cerachrom bezel and green dial. Among the Rolex Submariner no date watches, references like 14060 and 114060 are considered as most popular. From the old generation, references like 5512, 5513 and 1680 enjoyed wide popularity during their production period. Apart from the above, most of the vintage submariner models are greatly preferred by experienced watch collectors, thanks to their historical importance and rarity. The Best Diving watch Photo Credit: Rolex Official The Rolex Submariner is the most admired diving watch ever produced. It has been considered as the most ideal analogue dive watch in the 300m depth category. In comparison with other diving timepieces in the market, submariner boasts some superior characteristics that make it a trustworthy diving instrument. For example, Rolex uses 904L grade for its stainless steel wristwatches, including submariners. In case of Rolesor models, the brand uses 18 carat gold and 904L steel. Most dive watches available in the market are made of 316L stainless steel. In comparison, 904L steel is more durable and corrosion-resistant. As a result, the submariner Rolex watch offers better corrosion-resistance when exposed to saline sea water. During diving, the diver should be able to read the time with a glance. To ensure better dial visibility underwater, a diving watch must feature an easy to read dial with the luminescent coating on its markers and hands. The Submariner watch features broad hands and large hour-markers for crystal clear reading of the time. All their hands and the markers are embedded with Chromalight, a proprietary luminescent coating that offers superior and long-lasting glow compared to Super LumiNova and other luminescent technologies. The unidirectional bezel is a crucial component of all modern day dive watches. It has been used for monitoring diving time and decompression stops. It rotates only in a counter-clockwise direction to prevent accidental manipulation underwater. All present-generation Submariners feature unidirectional rotating bezels with ceramic (Cerachrom) bezel insert, which is virtually scratch-proof and resistant to discoloration. This easy to operate bezel also features Chromalight lume on its triangle marker for better readability in the dark environments. This extremely durable bezel guarantees accurate monitoring of diving time and ensures the safety of the diver. The Submariners are available with Black, Blue or Green bezels. Among them, Black-bezel Submariners top the list in terms of production and availability. The Green bezel models are rare, and most sought-after among them are ‘Hulk’ (116610LV) and ‘Kermit’ (122610LV). In the current line-up of 41mm versions, the ref. 126610LV features a green bezel. The Rolex Submariner blue bezel models included in the latest generation are: 126619LB, 126613LB and 126618LB. The modern self-winding movements that power Rolex Submariner watches demonstrate excellent standards of precision, shock-resistance, magnetic-resistance and reliability. All the present generation submariners are ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ and provide an exceptional precision of -2/+2 seconds/day. The Parachrom hairspring offers greater resistance to shocks and temperature variations. The Chronergy escapement ensures exceptional power reserve (up to 70 hours in new generation watches). These characteristics ensure excellent chronometric performance even in harsh conditions. The Submariner watch incorporates the time-honored ‘Oyster’ design featuring monobloc middle-case, screw-down crown with Triplock triple waterproofness system, scratch-resistant sapphire glass and screw-down case back. This proven system provides an exceptional water resistance of 300 meters. A durable, secure and expandable strap is necessary for dive watches. Each submariner watch is fitted with an Oyster bracelet. Both robust and comfortable, this bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock clasp, which prevents accidental opening. The bracelet also features the Glidelock system, which grants fine adjustments of the bracelet without employing any tools – and allowing it to be worn and comfortably over a diving suit. All Rolex Submariner date watches feature a Cyclops lens affixed on the glass for a clear and magnified view of the date display. A Great Investment Originally introduced as a great tool watch for divers, the Submariner has gradually become an ultimate status symbol, which makes it a superb investment option. This collectible timepiece ensures good returns in the future, thanks to its immense popularity and excellent resale value. The Rolex Submariner price differs depending upon the generation and materials used. For example, the new generation Rolex submariners introduced in 2020 has an approximate price range starting from 69,000 HKD to 346,000 HKD (Hong Kong Dollars). When it launched in the 1950s, the Submariner had a retail price of around US $150 (approximately 1200 Hong Kong Dollars). Since then, the price of the Submariner watch has been increased multiple times. Around the world, a large number of connoisseurs collect both new and vintage models of the submariner. The historical Submariners, especially those produced before the 1970s, are most sought-after in the vintage watch market. Some of them cost more than that of a new generation submariner. Among them, some rare references achieve record-breaking prices during the watch auctions. For example, in 2018, Christie’s auctioned a Submariner reference 6538 watch for more than $1 million.
