Record Breaking Rolex

If you are into luxury watches investments, then Rolex is no doubt your right brand. The Genevan watchmaker is seen as the apex of the Swiss luxury watch industry and represents status and supremacy that is incomparable by any other makers. Rolex is your safe bet. Monetary worth will only grow over time if the watches are well-preserved. Classic and limited models will even go up to five, six or even seven digits at auctions. Paul Newman’s own Daytona was sold at an auction, for a record-breaking price of 17.75 million USD, or about 15.3 million EUR in New York back in 2017. It is classified as one of the most significant collector’s watches in the 20th century, despite its minor defects.

Price of Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner ref.114060 is one of the most well-known and popular watches around the world. Its three-hand model that has no date display is priced around 7,900 USD in mint condition, while regular pre owned ones depreciated for at most 500 USD further. A brand-new Submariner Date that comes with date display and the reference number 116610LM costs about 9,300 USD, pre-owned pieces around 8,600 USD. The “Red Sub” that comes with reference number 1680 is a vintage piece that is being set sights on by many, so prices are demanded to up to around 18,500 USD pre-owned. Developed for the French company Compagnie maritime d’expertises, the COMEX Version crafted by Rolex is also in high demand and its worth can go up to 37,000 USD.

Aside from vintage Rolex pieces, watch lovers are also hooked on its green Submariner models “Hulk” and “Kermit”. The Hulk ref. 116610LV with its signature green bezel and dial is priced around 11,100 USD in mint condition and about 10,200 USD for pre-owned ones. As for Kermit, it also has the green bezel like Hulk, but its dial is black in colour and aligns with the regular Submariner pieces. Price of a brand new Kermit piece is set around 16,000 USD, while pre-owned ones have a more friendly price at about 11,000 USD, though still slightly more pricey than the Submariner Date that is stainless steel and has the bezel in black.

Investing in a Rolex Daytona

The stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is an investment piece that you cannot miss in the watch industry. Being one of the best watch investments that one could make since its release in 2016, the model with reference number 116500LM is sought after by many watch collectors that long waiting times are expected normal when purchasing from offline sellers. You can purchase it online if you want to get your hands on it quicker, but it will be more expensive. With an official listing price of 14,000 USD, a brand-new stainless steel Daytona is demanded for around 20,500 USD. Pre-owned pieces aren’t seen much cheaper either, which again further proves it as a valuable investment. This ref. 116500LN piece has a Cerachrom ceramic bezel in black. Credited to the usage of in-house caliber 4130, its power can last up to 72 hours.

With a stainless steel bezel, its predecessing model (ref. 116520) uses the same in-house 4130 caliber. Prior to the release of the new Daytona in 2016, its official listing is around 13,500 USD. Its pre-owned price went up to 15,400 USD soon production of this stopwatch-function compatible sports watch came to an end a few years later. Brand-new pieces of this model are expected to go up to 19,100 USD or more.

Vintage and Gold Daytonas

The model debuted in 1988 and has been in high demand ever since. The 4030 caliber used in this piece was based on the Zenith El Primero. A pre-owned Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with ref 16520 can go up to 23,400 USD. Particularly the “Paul Newman” Daytona model, it is exceptionally scarce. The dial is the only part that makes it different from other Daytonas released in the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, it is not surprising to see that the technology used are very much the same. Aiming for a Paul Newman Daytona, better prepare at least 123,400 USD in cash. If the signature dial is not right up your alley, a Daytona from the 1960s may be a good substitution with prices starting at 55,500 USD.

Rolex’s Everose gold (ref.116508), which the models are with 18-karat yellow, white or rose gold, has a higher price than the stainless steel models for its material used. However, interestingly, their prices come in lower online than the official listing price. While you will only need as little as 30,200 USD for a mint-condition Rolex Daytona, its official listing is around 42,500 USD. You may keep an eye on bicolar models in stainless steel and gold - it is quite popular among the insiders. Mint condition watches with reference number 116503 are priced around 15,800 USD, while pre-owned ones can go down a little bit to prices starting around 14,700 USD. You can get yourself the older models from the 1990s which you can get your hands on for 11,200 USD or lower.

History of Rolex

Rolex watches are signature luxury items just like Hermès handbags, Cartier bracelets or Ferrari. The key to this maker’s success? Consistency. The Rolex Oyster series have been maintaining its design more or less the same throughout the past decades and keeping the improvements to minute details minimal - often not even noticable at first glance. As a result, this consistency has allowed their products to remain classic and remarkable that also explain its steady growth of collective value. The watches’ high retaining values are mainly contributed by the ageless and coherent designs. Same also applies to other notable Rolex models such as the Datejust, Daytona, Day-Date and Submariner.

The Geneva-based watchmaker has been claimed unofficially that they sell close to one million watches every year, which equals to almost two and a half billion USD of turn over. Gold element is also introduced more often into circulation by the brand than any other watch makers.

The solid foundation of Rolex’s reputation is also built upon its independence and the vast majority of production being kept in-house. It has always remained a major concern for many other notable watchmakers. Their strategic company policy is also another key to their success: It is uncommon to see them having factory workshop tours, the CEOs rarely give interviews, and the annual returns are always kept unknown to the public.
