  2. Rolex Air King: The Best Entry-Level Collection from Rolex

Rolex Air King: The Best Entry-Level Collection from Rolex

Sometimes the Rolex Air King is somehow less discussed among its other popular fellows in the Rolex family such as the bling bling names Submariner and Daytona. However, many Rolex enthusiasts recommend the Air-King for those who begin to get into the giant Swiss watch brand. Sharing the brand’s legacy and history, the Rolex Air-King watch is regarded as the best Rolex entry watch for new collectors. Being one of Rolex’s longest running lineups, the Rolex Air King is definitely a watch worthy of your attention. Read on and see how this watch keeps up more than just a Rolex basic watch.  Reason Why Rolex Air King is the Best Rolex Entry Watch Affordability To many watch collectors, the price of the Rolex Air King must be the biggest reason. At the current Rolex catalog, the Air King watch is among the cheapest Rolex watch models. With its comparatively low price marking, the Air King Rolex watch makes an amazing entry point to the world of Rolex.  Exceptional Quality Despite its lower price tag, its quality and performance sure do not lag behind any other Rolex models. Rolex has been updating this collection with advanced materials and technologies. Its current model is well crafted with the exclusive Oystersteel and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The watch is anti-magnetic and water-resistant up to a depth of 100 meters. Furthermore,  the Air King is Rolex Superlative Chronometer as well as COSC certified.  Unique dial design Additionally, this watch is also ideal for watch lovers who are genuinely into its design. The current model Air King 116900 features a drastically updated design from the previous models. This new watch maintains its iconic Air King 369 hour markers while adding the Explorer’s Mercedes hour hand.  The dial is also highlighted with playful coloured details like the bright green colored second hand, the yellow-colored Rolex crown as well as green-colored “Rolex” brand name. The Air King’s dial is a very unique, standout design among others in Rolex’s sport lineup. History of Rolex Air King Rolex Air King has a deep relationship with the military Air Force. During and after World War II, Rolex released a handful of the “Air” pilot watch models for the British Royal Air Force. The Rolex Air King was released after a series of Air models, the Air Lion, Air Tiger and Air Giant, and outlasted them.  This Rolex pilot watch was first introduced in 1945 with the reference 4925. It features a 34 mm stainless steel case with smooth bezel, a cream dial and Arabic numerals for even hours. The early Air King models all housed a manual wound Hunter movement that was similar to other stainless steel Rolex Oyster models.  Evolution of Rolex Air King Watches As one of Rolex’s oldest watch models still being listed in the catalog, the Air-King has evolved dramatically over its long history while retaining its fundamental style.  Rolex Air King 5500 This Rolex 5500 Air King watch is considered as a representative vintage Air King model in the current secondary market. It was released in 1957 as the successor of the previous reference 6652 released in 1953. The watch is equipped with a 34 mm stainless steel case, a domed bezel and a matching Oyster steel bracelet. It featured a three-hand creamy silver dial with stick hour markers.  Air King 5500 This watch has soon become an iconic model in the collection that is rare and desirable among the vintage watch collectors.  Rolex Air King 14000 In 1989, Rolex introduced the five-digit Reference 14000 as an update model to the Air King 5500. It was another new approach for the collection after 37 years. This model featured the later-iconic Arabic numerals at the 3-6-9 hour markers, with stick markers in between. This Arabic numeral version had instantly proved popular with customers. It also featured the most advanced Rolex caliber 3000 movement at the time.  Air King 14000 There was also a variant with reference 14010 that featured the “engine turned bezel.” At the time the engine turned bezel was a popular alternative for the Rolex lovers who didn’t prefer the flashy fluted bezel that was on many Datejusts models. In 2000, both the Air King 14000 and Air King 14010 were updated with the newer in-house caliber 3130 movement.  Rolex Air King 114200 In 2007, Rolex replaced the 14000 models with six-digit references, the 114200 models. These new references of Rolex Air-King maintained a 34mm Oystersteel case with the scratch-proof sapphire crystal and a matching Oystersteel bracelet. The robust bracelet was updated to solid end-links. The Air King 114200 was fitted with a smooth bezel while its variants, the Air King 114210 had an engine-turned bezel and the Air King 114234 featured a fluted white gold bezel. Air King White Steel 114234 White The generation of Rolex Air King was the first models that were COSC certified in the collection. Led by the Rolex 114200, these models are updated with a “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” marking on their dials above the 6 o’clock.  Rolex Air King 116900 After two years of discontinuation, Rolex released a new Air-King Reference 116900 in 2016. At first glance, this Rolex Air King 2016 version obviously varies from the previous models in terms of design aesthetics. Instead of the old 34mm monochromatic Air-King case, this new generation of the Air-King features a larger 40mm Oystersteel case, which is the same case as the Rolex Milgauss 116400. This Rolex 116900 is also powered by the same in-house movement 3131 Caliber with anti-magnetism features with the Milgauss watch.  Air King Black Dial 116900 Black The brand has placed a relatively playful dial on the new Air King watch. While featuring the iconic large 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, the dial is fitted with a bright green second hand. The brand logo and name is also placed in a bold execution that the Rolex crown logo is enemaled in sharp yellow and “ROLEX” is in green. It has become a standing out characteristic of the Air King model.  No matter if you prefer the simpler classic older models or go for the newest bold model, the Air-King is a great choice as a Rolex entry watch. It’s definitely one of the best solid starter Rolex watches, being lower priced than other sports models in the brand. Holding more than 75 years of history behind it, the Rolex Air King has proven its value and market as an important part of the brand amongst the longest running Rolex collections.

Offering optimum performance with endurance, they have been perfectly geared to efficiently handle various activities on the sea, on land or in the sky. The present Prospex is the most modern representation of the company’s rich history in creating chronographs, diving instruments, event timers, and display systems, and outdoor-sports watches. Seiko’s impressive stint with the adventurous and sports activities began in the 1960s. In 1965, the brand introduced their first diving watch. Since then, the Japanese company has been maintaining its status as the world’s leading manufacturer of affordable yet high-quality diving timepieces. The name ‘Prospex’ stands for professional specifications and this comprehensive series brings together all of Seiko’s sports watch expertise under one roof. Presently, the collection is comprised of various diving models, chronographs and field watches. This range is also ideal for experiencing various technologies implemented in precision timekeeping, like Mechanical, Kinetic, Quartz, Spring-Drive and Solar. The Seiko Prospex line-up for the international market includes SEA, LAND, SPEEDTIMER and STREET collections. Prospex SEA This remarkable series is comprised of Seiko’s diving watches, including both recreational and professional models. The company has categorized its dive watches mainly into two groups. The first segment traditionally consists of Scuba Divers. Seiko’s most popular recreational divers are Monster, Samurai, Shogun, Sumo, Willard and Turtle. The next segment is Marinemaster Professional. As the name suggests, these sturdy and extremely water-resistant watches are used for deep-diving activities, mainly conducted for industrial or research purposes. This category includes diving timepieces with a water resistance of 300 meters and above. Origins of the Seiko tuna family date back to 1975 when the company launched the so-called Grandfather Tuna, a professional dive watch with 600 meters depth rating. They feature either Hardlex or Sapphire crystal on the front side, allowing the unobstructed view of the dial indications. They are adequately equipped with a screwed case back and the screw-down crown for ensuring optimum water resistance. In the automatic models, the brand uses tried and tested calibers like 4R36, 6R15, 6R35 and 8L35. They usually display hours, minutes and seconds, with a date or day date. Seiko also offers diving watches and featuring quartz movements, including Kinetic and Solar. Some of these models are equipped with GMT or Chronograph functions. The company also produces state-of-the-art spring-drive divers, but in limited editions. Prospex Sea Diver Scuba SBDY017 All Seiko diving watches are typically mounted with a unidirectional bezel, a must-have component for modern-day divers. You can clearly identify various Seiko dive watch models from the distinctive shapes and designs of case, bezel, dial, markers and hands. For example, the “Turtle” features a turtle-shell shape case, and “Tuna” got its nickname as its massive casing looks like a tuna tin. The company additionally offers a number of limited edition re-editions from its Scuba diver family. Among them, the most recent representations are the First Diver’s Re-creation from the Seiko Prospex 2017 collection and the 1970 Diver’s Re-creation released in 2019. Along with the above-limited series watches, the brand also offers modern re-interpretations of its historic dive models. For example, the Seiko Prospex SPB143 is a modern reinterpretation of the 1965 diving watch model 62MAS. The Seiko diving watches also emphasize large hour-markers and hands. For ensuring the excellent visibility of the dial, they feature proprietary material LumiBrite on the hands and indexes. They are available with metal bracelets or highly durable silicone straps. Tested for a 200m depth rating, Seiko Prospex Diver Scuba watches are relatively affordable. Its price range starts modestly at HK$ 2,500. Prospex Sea Marine Master SBBN025 The timepieces from the Marinemaster Professional family are usually expensive. These robust stainless steel wristwatches boast excellent features like sapphire crystal, luminescent markers and hands, a screwed-down crown, impressive water resistance and reliable automatic movements. Seiko also offers gold-toned versions of these wristwatches. Distinguished by their dive-watch-inspired design, the Prospex Fieldmaster automatic is mounted with a rotating compass bezel. The other noteworthy timekeepers from the Prospex Land Series are the Field Automatic, the Fieldmaster Digital, the Landmaster, and the Landtracer.   Prospex LX This exclusive sports watch family prominently represents the Japanese company’s impressive capability to fuse the most acclaimed artistic traditions with practical functions. These timepieces come with upgraded design features for ensuring optimum comfort for the wearer’s wrist. On the aesthetic side, the Zaratsu-polished case provides a brighter appearance thanks to the dazzling reflections of the light on its broad surfaces. Seiko Presage: A Guide to Japanese Aesthetic Traditional Watches

Introduction The Seiko Presage series prominently represents a perfect union of world-renowned Japanese aesthetic sense and the company’s immense expertise in the field of mechanical watchmaking. A fully integrated watch manufacture, Seiko has been renowned for its all-around proficiency in various fields, especially quartz technology, which has revolutionized the precision timekeeping arena. The brand has also introduced several brilliant innovations in both electronic and mechanical branches of watchmaking. The advent of quartz watches in the 1970s had a great impact on the long-established mechanical watchmaking traditions. However, in the 1990s, people began valuing the timeless nature of traditional watches and their enchanting mechanisms. This trend has gradually gained momentum, especially in Japan. To properly serve various categories of its loyal customers, Seiko Watch Corporation has constituted diverse segments for affordable and luxury wristwatches. Under the Seiko brand, the company offers a number of budget-friendly mechanical watch collections.  Among its two luxury brands, Grand Seiko has been available in the international marketplace since 2010, and Credor is limited to Japan’s domestic market. In 2017, Grand Seiko became a fully independent marque. Presently, Seiko is offering mechanical watches from flagship lines like Presage, Prospex and Lukia (women’s collection). SEIKO Presage  Grand Seiko watches have been admired worldwide for their extremely precise movements, immaculate finishing, finest decorations and artistic expression, usually inspired by the native beauty of Japan. With the Presage line, Seiko is now offering the much-admired Japanese aesthetic essence in an accessible price range. An elegant mechanical dress watch collection, Presage serves a wide range of customers with a passion for traditional timekeepers. Seiko has categorized this series into two groups: Basic and Prestige. As their names suggest, they respectively belong to two segments: The mid-price (from HK $2,500 to HK $5,000) and the luxury (from HK $5,000 to HK $28,000), just below the price range of Grand Seiko mechanical and spring-drive collections. The models with the date display are driven by the Calibre 4R35. Depending upon the version, the placement of date window can vary (3, 4.30 or 6). The open-heart versions house 4R38 (with the dial opening at 9 o’clock) or 4R39 (with 24-hour sub dial and dial opening). The variant with central power reserve indicator and date sub-dial is equipped with the 4R57 calibre. Each of these movements provides approximately 41 hours of power reserve once fully wound. Presage Basic Line SARY129 The Seiko Presage collection has been renowned for its attractive dials, representing various facets of Japanese aesthetic traditions – including the classic and modern. In the Basic line, you will discover designs like circular, gradient, grained, plain, sun-ray, tiled, vertical, undulating and more. The latest addition to an extensive range of Presage dials is a distinct pattern inspired by the cobblestone paved streets of Ginza. The trendiest design in this line-up is Seiko Presage Cocktail, offering timepieces with dial colors inspired by popular concoctions. Each model is motivated by a different blend, for example, Black Russian, Frozen Margarita, Mojito, Negroni, Old Clock and Tequila Sunset. Appropriately representing the bustling lifestyle of Japanese megacities, these contemporary styled wristwatches are highly sought after by urban customers. These high-spirited models additionally feature a date display or an open-heart dial. They come in an affordable retail price range starting just above HK $2,500. (2) Presage Prestige This segment represents more exclusive and premium Presage watch models. Some of them highlight aesthetics features inspired by certain Grand Seiko timepieces. Prestige line offers luxury wristwatches with various configurations, starting from the classic three-hand watches with or without date to multi-function models. The brand uses technically advanced automatic movement families like 6R and 8R for this series. They offer better autonomy than their predecessors. The Seiko Presage GMT models are equipped with the Calibre 6R64, a new-generation self-winding movement with a power reserve of 45 hours. The three-hand automatic with date watches feature calibers like 6R15, 6R35 or 6L35. The Prestige range also offers a spring drive watch, the reference SARR003. Prestige Automatic SARX033 Like the Basic Line, the Prestige category also provides a diverse choice of dial styles. A great thing about this premium range from Seiko is the availability of enamel dials, created according to the ancient Japanese artistic traditions. Mastered by a few talented craftsmen in Japan, the manufacturing of these immaculately finished dials demands meticulous workmanship and relentless attention to detail. This impressive collection additionally offers other luxurious dials like Arita Porcelain, Lamé, Guilloche (sharp-edged, sunburst or wave patterns) and Urushi. The Presage watches featuring exotic dials (enamel, porcelain and urushi) are usually expensive than their counterparts with other dial styles. Summary Seiko Presage is an excellent collection from both aesthetic and technical standpoints. It offers a comprehensive range of finely crafted wristwatches dedicated to customers with a zeal for appreciating both mechanical watchmaking aircraft and the Japanese aesthetic traditions. These creations are superbly luxurious but still easily accessible. Perfectly reflecting the essence of Japanese artistic visions, these timepieces are equipped with state-of-the-art horological engines. The automatic movements from 4R, 6R and 8R families are renowned for their precision and reliability. They also feature hand-winding utility and stop-seconds hand function. The spring-drive movements, of course, demonstrate Seiko’s expertise in fusing various technologies for achieving high-precision timekeeping. All Seiko Presage automatic watches feature a see-through case back, affording the view of the movement beating inside. The refined case dimensions make them perfect dress watches. The Presage wristwatches are available in stainless steel and titanium versions. In the stainless steel category, gold-toned and dual-tone versions are also available. Some timepieces feature the proprietary Dia Shield coating, which enhances the scratch-resistance of the case and bracelet. Topped with Harldex or sapphire crystals, these timekeepers offer clear view of their dial display. Fitted with screwed-case back and transparent glass, Seiko Presage timepieces are available with water resistances 30, 50 and 100 meters. They come fitted on a metal bracelet, genuine leather (alligator or calf) strap or synthetic wristband. Artfully combining exceptional performance and classic style, these elegant wristwatches offer optimum wearer comfort. In addition to regular models, this flagship collection also includes various Seiko Presage limited edition watches like the 140th Anniversary series, and the collaborative projects with Studio Ghibli.

  6. Daytona Rolex : An In-Depth Review of The Series’ Iconic Models

Daytona Rolex : An In-Depth Review of The Series’ Iconic Models

Introduction Daytona Rolex is the most admired mechanical luxury sports chronograph ever made. Named after the iconic Daytona Beach racetrack in Florida, this timepiece is an ultimate micro-engineering marvel dedicated to endurance motor racing. Introduced in 1963, Daytona is not the first chronograph watch to come out from the house of Rolex. The company has been producing chronographs since the 1930s. Many of the historical models are now highly sought-after by seasoned collectors. History and Evolution Before introducing the Daytona collection, Rolex had produced a number of chronograph watches equipped with customized Valjoux movements. Among them, reference 6238 is known as Pre-Daytona. In 1963, the brand introduced a manual winding mechanical chronograph watch featuring an external tachymeter bezel made of steel. This timepiece with reference number 6239 established the foundation of the Rolex Daytona collection. Known as Cosmograph, this stainless steel watch was released without the DAYTONA inscription on the dial.  In the mid-1960s, Rolex began capitalizing on DAYTONA name on the dial of Cosmograph to mark the brand’s partnership with the legendary international speedway as its official timekeeper. (1) First Generation The first generation of Daytona Rolex watches is comprised of various references from 1963 to the late 1980s. These watches house modified Valjoux 72 hand-wound mechanical movements. The notable references from the Original series are 6239, 6240, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264, and 6265. All these Daytonas feature stainless steel case measuring 37mm diameter, acrylic front glass, steel case back and tachymeter bezel. Some models have a tachymeter scale engraved on the metallic bezel. Certain references feature a black Plexiglas tachymeter bezel-insert instead of the engraved steel bezel. Rolex Daytona 6239 (2) Second Generation Although the world’s first self-winding chronograph was introduced in 1969, Rolex had to wait until 1988 to update Daytona with an automatic calibre. Rolex procured the Zenith “El Primero” 3019PHC calibers and then extensively customized them to create a new calibre family designated Calibre 4030.The second-generation Daytona chronographs are equipped with this self-winding movement. The first Daytona model to be fitted with the Calibre 4030 was the reference 16520. These Rolex ‘Zenith’ Daytona watches feature a 40 mm diameter case mounted with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal instead of acrylic glass. The watches from the second series can be distinguished from their five-digit reference numbers, for example, 16520 (stainless steel), 16523 (stainless steel and yellow gold), and 16528 (yellow gold). (3) Third Generation In 2000, Rolex introduced a state-of-the-art self-winding mechanical movement (4130) to propel the Daytona family to new horizons. Entirely designed and manufactured in-house, this column-wheel and vertical clutch chronograph calibre incorporates innovations like Paramagnetic blue PARACHROM hairspring, Large balance wheel with variable inertia, High-precision regulating via four gold MICROSTELLA nuts and the Traversing balance bridge. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this 44 jewel movement provides an exceptional autonomy of 72 hours. The Daytonas equipped with the self-winding calibre 4130 belong to the third generation, which uses a six-digit reference number system. The first creation from this series was the reference 116520 Rolex Daytona chronograph, which features a 40mm diameter 904L grade stainless steel case and an engraved metal bezel with a 400 km/hr tachymeter scale. Rolex has been regularly expanding the third series by adding new references in Oystersteel, Bimetal (steel + gold), Gold and Platinum. The brand has also introduced new versions outfitted with ceramic Cerachrom Tachymeter bezel. Not to forget the gem-set Daytonas that instantly captured the attention of glitterati. The most recently released Rolex Daytona 2021 collection is comprised of meteorite dial versions featuring 18-carat gold cases. Iconic Daytona Models Since its official launch in 1963, the Rolex Daytona collection has been evolved tremendously through three distinct generations and several references. These valuable watches are available in steel, gold, platinum and bi-metal (steel and gold) versions. In this page, we present some iconic references from the world’s most-admired mechanical luxury sports chronograph collection.  (1) Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’  The iconic Rolex Daytona paul newman dial watches belong to the first generation. Initially, Daytonas were available with two dial options: White with black counters or Black with white counters. Subsequently, the company introduced the newer dial styles. Among them, the Daytona 6239 with an exotic dial rose to fame due to its connection with the legendary actor and motorsports icon Paul Newman. The other references like 6240, 6241 and 6263 were also offered with the similar design. These references were also made with standard dials, but in terms of value, the models with Paul Newman style outperform them in the vintage watch market. In 2017, a ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona timepiece once owned by the award-winning Hollywood actor was sold for a record-breaking price of $17,752,500 (Above 138.11 million Hong Kong dollars!) during the Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo auction in New York.  From the first generation, the other iconic models are: the Paul Newman Daytona 6263 “The Oyster Sotto” and the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6263 Oyster Eric Clapton Albino. 10. A Complete Guide to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual

A Complete Guide to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual

With watches becoming bulkier and more feature-rich with every update, there is something about a classic analog watch that turns heads. The Oyster Perpetual Rolex brings back the simplicity and elegance of a classic wristwatch. It has none of the fuss commonly seen in modern timepieces – no date window, rotating bezel, or chronograph. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual brings back the glory of the original Rolex watches.  Rolex Oyster Perpetual and the Rolex Submariner also use the brand name of ‘Oyster Perpetual‘ but these two watches are not simplistic and classic like the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. With Oyster Perpetual, Rolex has carved a niche for classic analog watches.   An affordable Rolex The Rolex Perpetual is not only a great watch, but it is also at the lower price point within the premium watch market. The Oyster Perpetual Date is another great option that is also at a lower price point compared to other Rolex watches. For watch lovers and collectors looking to make an entry into the world of premium watches, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a great choice.  History of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Two in-house Rolex inventions lie at the heart of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The first is its distinct design and aesthetics. Another key invention was the self-winding perpetual movement. The Oyster Perpetual originates from the 1926 Rolex Oyster collection. It was the first watch collection in the world with water resistance. The name of the line comes from its case design, which is like the shell of an oyster. Special tools are needed to open the case of the Oyster Perpetual.  Developments in 1931 gave the Oyster Perpetual its present shape and form. Rolex came up with the self-winding movement this year. This movement got its power from the continuous (perpetual) movement of the wearers’ wrist.  The Oyster Perpetual collection was a mega success from the very beginning. Its success led to many other lines being named with the prefix of ‘Perpetual’. The term itself is now reminiscent of Rolex‘s path-breaking technological innovation.  For a long time, the Oyster Perpetual was predominantly positioned as a women’s watch. The main reason behind this was the relatively smaller case diameter of Rolex Oyster Perpetuals. Case diameter within the series used to be 26 mm, 31 mm, 34 mm, and 36 mm. Traditionally smaller case diameters are associated with women’s watches. Among these models, the Oyster Perpetual 36 was a top pick for many buyers and watch lovers.  Oyster Perpetual 39 114300-0005 Rolex Oyster Perpetual in the 2000s In the middle of 2000 came the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual models with six-digit reference numbers. The watches from the 2000 production line are still in the market. These watches came with a case diameter of 34 mm. The line began to be known as Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 34. It was different from the previous lines of Oyster perpetual. Though it came with a case diameter of 34 mm, the case was designed to appear larger. There was also slight modification in the straps, making them more functional.  Oyster Perpetual 34 114200 Green 2015 and the launch of Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 mm In 2015 came the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39. With a case diameter of 39 mm, the line appealed to both men and women. Men, particularly, found the increased case diameter to be more masculine. In no time, the watch became a favorite among men. With another round of design upgrades, the watch was made available in 5 color options. Despite more color options, purists and traditionalists loved the classic black and white dials the most. The 39 mm diameter was a game-changer in every way for Rolex. It was big enough for big wrists but not so big that those with smaller wrists would avoid it. The watch has a simple, elegant style, much like the other Oyster Perpetual models.   Oyster Perpetual 39 114300/Purple Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 From 26 mm to 41 mm, Rolex had a significant shift in case diameter. However, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 mm further expanded the market of Oyster Perpetual. With 7 dial color options, this Rolex Oyster Perpetual 2020 watch brought more options while painting the hallmark simplicity in design. While some saw the jump in case diameter as drastic, it did catch the attention of watch lovers. Most were happy to find their favorite watch in bigger case size. The color options also played a key role in the watch’s success. Its bright and lively colors were called ‘Stella-inspired’. While purists held to the classic dials, the newer ones were a work of art in their own rights. Bright colors like green, blue, yellow, and red gave the watch a revamped appearance while preserving its signature simplicity. Apart from color variations, Rolex did not do anything to the watch in terms of upgrades and modifications. Rolex‘s caliber 3230 powers the Oyster Perpetual 41.
